TSMC Q3 Earnings Debrief

New York, New York
— October 17, 2025

When you hear the phrase “AI supply chain,” it’s easy to think of names like Nvidia or OpenAI. But beneath every AI model and GPU is a company powering the foundation of it all — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

This week, Barclays raised its price target on TSMC to $355 per share, signaling around 18% upside over the next 12 months. That upgrade came just hours after the company reported strong Q3 results, reinforcing why TSMC is seen as one of the key enablers of the AI revolution.

🧩 The AI Growth Story

TSMC’s CEO, C.C. Wei, summed up the story perfectly on the earnings call:

“The explosive growth in AI model adoption means more computation is required, which leads to more cutting-edge silicon demand.”

That single sentence captures the entire bull case for TSMC — as AI workloads grow exponentially, so does the demand for the chips that make them possible.

💡 The Business Breakdown

TSMC operates across five product lines, but the bulk of its business comes from high-performance computing (HPC) and smartphones, which together make up about 90% of total revenue. HPC alone now represents half of TSMC’s sales, thanks to surging demand from data centers and AI-focused clients.

Customers include Nvidia, which relies on TSMC’s advanced process nodes to build its AI chips, and Apple, which continues to drive demand on the mobile side.

🏭 Scaling for the Future

TSMC is facing the kind of problem every company wants: too much demand.
They’re tackling it from two angles:

  • Volume: Building new fabs in Arizona, Japan, Germany, and Taiwan to support future capacity.
  • Product: Rolling out smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient chips — a critical need given the power demands of AI.

Their upcoming N2 and A16 chips are designed to reduce energy use and shrink size — and remain on track for launch next year.

💰 Earnings Snapshot

The quarter came in strong across the board:

  • Revenue: $33.1 billion (5% above expectations of $31.5B)
  • Earnings per Share: $2.92
  • Gross Margin: 59.5% (better than expected, boosted by favorable exchange rates and production efficiency)
  • Full-Year Guidance: Raised from 30% YoY growth to the mid-30% range
  • CapEx: Increased $1–2 billion to roughly $41 billion

The stock currently trades around $300 per share, up 45% over the past year and 225% over the last two years.

⚠️ The Risks

Of course, not everything is smooth. TSMC faces ongoing geopolitical risks — particularly U.S.–China trade tensions that affect both chip exports and the rare earth materials critical to semiconductor manufacturing. Any escalation could pressure margins or supply chains.

Still, TSMC’s global diversification and aggressive CapEx investments position it well for long-term resilience.

📈 The Takeaway

Between record revenue, rising demand from AI, and an expanded global footprint, TSMC is cementing itself as one of the most critical companies in modern technology. The AI story doesn’t happen without them — and investors are starting to realize it.

Be good.
